Product Description

Affinity purified Bauhinia purpurea agglutinin (BPA/BPL) is a tetrameric Lectin with a molecular weight of 120 kDa. It has the highest binding affinity for glycoconjugates containing galactosyl (β-1,3) N-acetylgalactosamine structures and can also bind oligosaccharides with a terminal α-linked N-acetylgalactosamine. BPA is lactose-specific, eluting with lactose, and shows specificity for blood groups A, B, and O (−SA). Treatment with neuraminidase or trypsin enhances agglutination, indicating that the receptor is masked by terminal carbohydrates. N-acetyl-D-galactosamine from Makela's group 2 sugars acts as a potent inhibitor. While BPA's binding specificity resembles that of peanut agglutinin, their tissue staining patterns are distinct.

Biotinylated BPL/BPA features an optimal amount of biotin for enhanced detection characteristics when using Avidin-HRP or Streptavidin-HRP conjugates, facilitating more sensitive detection in ELISA and Western-blotting applications.

Recommended Usage: Recommended dilutions of 0.5 – 10 µg / ml in 1X PBS. Less than 1 µg / ml will agglutinate human erythrocytes.
