Affinity purified Succinylated concanavalin A (Succ-Con A) is derived from native lectin concanavalin A (Con A). It is a nonagglutinating lectin that has a carbohydrate specificity for α linked mannose and glucose, with a sugar elution of α-methlyglucoside + α-methlymannoside. Succ-Con A have been studied for their effects to induce marked proliferation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Succ-Con A exhibits mitogenic action equal to native Con A and both increase lymphocytes levels of cyclic GMP. Unlike Con A, Succ-Con at high concertation does not decrease mitogenic activity. Succ-Con A reversibly prevents the growth of normal cells and restores a normal growth phenotype to transformed cells.
Colloidal gold can be used to visualize localization of specific saccharide moieties and examine the distribution of plasma membrane glycoproteins based on the binding pattern of Succinylated Concanavalin A Lectin (Succ Con A). Colloidal gold labeled lectins can be viewed via electron microscopy.
